    Helix Construction

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Step 1

  • Draw the front view and top views of the base of the cylinder.
  • Divide the top view into a convenient number of parts (say 12).

 

 

 

Step 2

  • Draw the helical surface as shown.
  • Note: AB = π x D = the circumference of the base of the cylinder.
  • AC is the pitch of the helix, that is, the rise for one revolution.
  • Divide AB and AC into 12 parts

 

 

 

Step 3

  • Project the divisions to the front view.
  • Draw the developments on the helical surface.

Step 4

Note, that if it is a right-hand helix, start as shown below on the left. If it is a left-hand helix, start as shown below on the right.
