Step 1
- Draw the front view and top views of the base of the cylinder.
- Divide the top view into a convenient number of parts (say 12).

- Draw the helical surface as shown.
- Note: AB = π x D = the circumference of the base of the cylinder.
- AC is the pitch of the helix, that is, the rise for one revolution.
- Divide AB and AC into 12 parts

Step 3
- Project the divisions to the front view.
- Draw the developments on the helical surface.

Note, that if it is a right-hand helix, start as shown below on the left. If it is a left-hand helix, start as shown below on the right.
